What is the history of US sanctions on Iran?

The US first imposed sanctions on Iran in November 1979, after the Islamic revolution overthrew the US-backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, halting oil imports and freezing $12bn in Iranian assets.

In 1995, then-President Bill Clinton issued executive orders preventing US companies from investing in Iranian oil and gas and trading with Iran. He banned US trade with Iran and investment in the country.
