In the 1980s Zahalka found herself living and making work in Bondi. Her depictions of Bondi’s visitors are a mix of warmth and amusement, yet they carry a satirical edge. In this image, a young woman in a black bikini shuts out the world and glaring sun to focus intently on a novel by Proust.

In The Sunbather #1, Zahalka employs a sophisticated satirical detail to challenge the anti-intellectualism often associated with Australian beach culture. A young woman in a black bikini is depicted not engaging with the surf, but using a novel by Marcel Proust—Remembrance of Things Past—as a physical shield. The book is placed directly over her eyes to block out the glaring sun, a brilliant visual pun where "high culture" serves a purely utilitarian, defensive purpose.

The Bathers 1989 from the series Bondi: playground of the Pacific

One of her most celebrated works, The Bathers focuses on Bondi and pays direct homage to Charles Meere’s 1940 painting Australian Beach Pattern. This iteration playfully updates the original image featuring postwar migrant families who assert their right to the essential Australian pleasures of the sun, surf and sand.
