The Bathers 1989 from the series Bondi: playground of the Pacific

One of her most celebrated works, The Bathers focuses on Bondi and pays direct homage to Charles Meere’s 1940 painting Australian Beach Pattern. This iteration playfully updates the original image featuring postwar migrant families who assert their right to the essential Australian pleasures of the sun, surf and sand.

Crucially, the subject is lying face down, head buried in the sand—a stark contrast to the heroic, perched, or upward-looking poses of the Dupain era. This anonymity and vulnerability serve as a realistic counterpoint to the "bronzed Aussie" archetype, celebrating skin types that the Australian sun traditionally punishes rather than perfects.

Zahalka subverts the athletic, "deeply tanned" ideal of the Australian body by featuring a fair-complexioned redhead, highlighting the physical reality of a population living under a harsh sun.
