Exotic birds 2017 from the series Wild Life 2006–17

In the Wild Life (2006–17) series, Zahalka recasts natural history dioramas to expose the artificiality of our relationship with nature. In Exotic birds (2017), the serene, constructed landscape is punctured by the intrusions of the modern world: a commercial airliner streaks across the sky, leaving a vapor trail, while the forest floor is littered with the detritus of consumption—discarded beer cans, Fanta cans, and snack wrappers. These interventions transform a static museum display into a site of urgent ecological critique.
