Hm. This is an interesting thread, but let’s address a couple of points.
It wasn’t the ‘Black dev community’ driven from the fedi. It was Black folks period. Some of them were devs, sure, but it was also just a lot of regular folks who just wanted to find a new place on the web. The fedi doesn’t have a racist reputation for driving off devs. It has that reputation for being antagonistic to Black folks in general. We shouldn’t be soft selling that point.
And I can accept this piece is well intentioned, but many of the uncertainty around certain aspects of Blacksky can be answered by just talking to that team, who are very open and accessible. I’m not exactly clear why this person just didn’t do that.
The conversation around whether or not Bluesky is decentralized or not is immaterial at this point and it just seems like folks want to use it as a vector to express how much they don’t like Bluesky. This is fine in the grand scheme of things, but Blacksky has proven ATProtocol can be independent, rendering whatever Bluesky is doing as irrelevant.
I say all this to make a point about the nihilism I see in the fedi is trying to creep into the really cool stuff that’s happening with ATProtocol.
We have to decide do want a better internet and learn from past mistakes or dwell on them in a way that kills our optimism and motivation for a better future.
No, I don’t care for Bluesky either for obvious reasons, but there are some really exciting things happening that the fedi could learn from and adopt, especially considering fedi development has stagnated quite a bit, which opened the door for Bluesky in the first place.
So I can appreciate this thread for what it’s trying to say, which I believe is in good faith.
But I want folks to be as honest about the shortcomings of the fedi as they try to be about Bluesky.
That’s how we get to cool stuff. https://mastodon.social/@mcc/115204936295073569
