I would contend most moderation in the fedi is poor because it focuses on obvious hate and pretty much ignores the conditions that allows hate to thrive.

Blacksky’s moderation is effective because it follows a community model that takes cultural context into account that is able to recognize hate vectors and eliminate them before they take root.

The lack of diversity in the fedi combined with its general aversion to decent tooling has made this almost impossible.

We can’t even agree racism exists here even if one doesn’t explicitly see it despite the reality of people constantly leaving because of it.

In this context, the ugly truth is that it’s just easier to deal with corporate social media despite it’s many deficiencies.
