I've been doing some soul searching lately. Sort of a side effect is I'm not on social media much anymore, that includes any of the big ones (even Bluesky). There's lots on my mind but I just haven't been feeling the need to share. Cue memes of people documenting every moment of their lives with a cellphone and insert here
Some days I wonder what it's really for. Nobody I know IRL is on Mastodon, so I only get to see non-personal posts from strangers typically about US politics or other matters I can't do anything about aside from the occasional boost. Being civically engaged I see in my mind as writing letters to your representative or organizing and attending protests. To be fair there is some really good analysis in the Fediverse which is interesting to read, but not actionable.
If I want to say something I feel it would fit better as a blog post somewhere more private (i.e. not federated). I've always liked the idea of the indi-web or the smol [sic] web. I may end up retreating to something more retro like a blog. In fact I started writing in GeminiSpace with an alias.
I often wonder about the long term viability of creating posts on the Fediverse. It's easier to maintain and backup and update things when it's just flat static files in some directories on the computer. For this reason and others I don't know if it's worth it anymore.
