in Puerto Rico, everybody uses BOTH their parents last names. since everybody uses both their dad and mom’s last names (in that order), it is normal for Puerto Rican women to NOT take on ―in contracts and legal documents― their husband’s last names. it’s weird. it would mean cosanguity, not marriage.
i’ve read court documents from the 1800s and women in Puerto Rico always kept their maiden names. actually, court records will show “known as Señora HusbandsLastName” as one of their knicknames.
