A judge has ruled in favor of Meta, saying training AI from copyrighted books is fair use.

The judge ruled that Meta’s use of copyrighted works in this case was transformative because the company’s AI models did not merely reproduce the authors’ books.

Additionally plaintiffs failed to convince the judge that Meta’s using the books to train AI harmed the market for those authors.

Another meaningful win for the AI industry following the Anthropic win in a similar case.
