Just finished Arundhati Roy's book, "God of Small Things".

Along with Pankaj Mishra's "Run and Hide", these books mark my new standard for how beautiful prose looks like.

Both books made me feel intense emotions, to the extent that I still remember passages from Mishra's book, months after I finish it, and feel intense pangs of sadness.

Any recommendations for similar books, in terms of intensity and, overall, the critique of society?
