Sudden realization: X11 DirectColor and PseudoColor visuals can almost certainly be implemented in 'hardware' today using GPU shader programs, since they're just maps from one color to another. (PseudoColor usually needs to go from 8 bits to 24 bits of 'color' data, but I suspect shader programs can do that.)
