Happy Easter to those celebrating! Here's a look at how eggs can be dyed and the molecules that cause the colours of some selected natural dyes in C&EN

Infographic on dyeing easter eggs. Eggs can be dyed by submerging them in a mixture of dye, water and vinegar. The vinegar protonates proteins in the eggshell cuticle, making portions of it positively charged. This makes it easier for dye molecules to stick to the cuticle, giving a more intense colour. A range of natural or synthetic dyes can be used.
