Most of them are promoting art event, indie games, vtuber, photography gathering, manga release, or even promoting other instance. Not to forget a reminder to fund the instance itself.

It's actually a good way to discover cool people in the instance community.

These ads also have cool design or event handrawn artwork.

Here's some banner example:
