When I started my CS PhD in 1994, I didn't even own a computer (and hadn't owned one for six years prior). I'm really starting to think I had the right idea about that.

I did get something to do schoolwork and check email, but that was a VT220 with a modem--something dumb enough where I didn't need to sleep with one eye open.
