the mechanism is that "real" nodes have "$": Symbol() which would normally get lost on serialization. and there's a blessed serializeTree() which escapes all real "$" to "$$" but does transfer that Symbol as "$". so it's revived as Symbol() on the other side, and know it's meant to be a UI node
