Looks from here like the Trump regime is hoping Iran will provide a Reichstag fire-type event (look it up) in the U.S. -- see those scary warnings of attacks on California.
Why? A pretext to escalate domestic fascism, such as even more direct interference with this year's elections.

Unfortunately, I keep thinking of something a professor said when I was in college, in the early days of the GW Bush era Iraq war: "The best way to combat terrorism is to take care of people. The best way to create terrorism is to terrorize people. And if your goal is war and surveillance, you have an incentive to keep people terrorized to make them terrorists."
