I developed shortcodes back in 2020 iirc, the idea was to pave the way for username changes without breaking links, using a hash id of the snowflake status id. We no longer need to pollute urls with usernames, because they (can soon) change.

Existing permalinks will remain supported, but we will transition to shortcode links across the platform (including federation urls) in the new year.
