There’s a big pile of nonsense in the UK about diversity in advertising, mostly led by right-wing people not understanding statistics (51% of adverts contain a black person is not the same as 51% of people in adverts are black).

And, honestly, I’m in two minds about it. Diversity exists in advertising because advertising is backed by psychology and it’s easier to manipulate people into buying things if the advert contains people they identify with. And I kind-of feel that minorities have enough to deal with, without being a target of psychological manipulation designed to part them from their money, so I might actually be opposed to diversity in adverts (with a few exceptions, such as public-service things and recruitment).

It’s weird that ‘people aren’t targeting my group sufficiently for manipulation’ is a real thing that alerted humans think.
