People who travel to Japan - what's the train pass I should get ahead of time? Is there anything else I should book ahead or plan to do?

I was there ten years ago and Natasha wrote an amazing guide for those going to try!Swift and I'm about to go again but I assume much of it is out of date.(and I don't have it anymore).
