I wonder if we couldn’t attempt to do to SMTP-based email what RCS is doing to SMS

djb proposed some improvements both small (QMTP, MXPS) and big (Internet Mail 2000) about 25 years ago.

MXPS (which uses special magic numbers for priority in MX records to indicate support for particular protocols) in particular could be used to implement a superseding protocol.

Ideally you would want to supersede both SMTP and the RFC 822/MIME-derived message format, but in a trivially downgradable way
