If you ever wanted to contribute to a compiler, but thought it was too daunting a task, improving diagnostics is an excellent way of get my started. It can involve checking things from multiple stages, but the objective is small and targeted, with a clear scope, and it is high visibility because the impact of better errors is clear to most. So many projects could do with a little bit of extra attention on this front.
