@DavidDavid here's my best guess: many people feel like they have a tight, cohesive community on the Fediverse. They think that if a platform federated, the worst users of that platform will be forcibly thrust into their community. I think it's a good thing that people have that sense of belonging. It would be better if they had more confidence that they can control their community connections.
