Asking for career advice

For those that went into management, when did you know/think you were ready? and what drove the decision to stop being an independent contributor?

I'm enjoying being an independent contributor who works on everything from 10 year architecture to sales strategy for the next weeks, but it feels like something unsustainable for a single person.

I collaborate with all from C suite to interns, and I love it.
