Herodotus:

In 550 BC, Croesus, 6th king of the Lydian kingdom (western part of modern Turkey) asked the oracle at Delphi about his plan to expand his empire and attack King Cyrus of the Persians.

“If you attack Cyrus you will destroy a great empire” came the response.

Buoyed by a such words Croesus attacked the Persians and was defeated. Taken prisoner by the Persians Croesus died in captivity and the kingdom of Lydia became a satrapy of the Persian Empire.
