If you feel the urge to weigh in on Puerto Rican statehood, even if it's just to comment that Puerto Rican's "voted" to become a state, you should first learn Puerto Rican history.

You should understand the flavor of racism your grandparents used against Puerto Ricans, and why that racism still exists today regardless of your political party affiliation.

Then, you can undo the conditioned belief that Puerto Ricans cannot govern themselves.

Again, nothing will piss you off about the US quite like learning by about Puerto Rican history. It’s a well of European and US racism.

And in perfect Colonialist racism, US people STILL weigh in on what Puerto Rico β€œshould be” or β€œshould have” without knowing anything about the country or history, or caring to learn. It’s like the perfect example of how shitty US Colonialism is.
