More weird old tech. This is the Charactron, originally patented in 1954, and used throughout 1960s. It was an another obscure CRT tech, in which characters were created by shooting beams of electrons *through* a stencilled metal plate with alphanumeric symbols. As the beam passed through the character matrix, it took the shape of the character it passed through, and displayed it on the screen.
