strange ramblings about the old internet sparked by a video i watched; LONG AS HELL
i don't even know what i really think about this? sort of just dumping what i think of here.
i feel weird about saying "i miss the old internet", because it's not entirely true... i certainly don't miss the slow internet speeds.
it's not like what people say about people nowadays who say they "miss frutiger aero". i was around for this stuff happening (born 2003, used sites like Vizzed, Y3/Y8, etc. mainly flash games and emulators), but i also barely interacted with forums, image boards, etc. probably due to my age when most of them were around.
experiencing "schfifty-five" for the first time today made me sort of realize that current "brainrot" etc isn't really all that different from old memes aside from the culture surrounding them, their exposure, how often you see them.
maybe it was because a lot of things were more personal? guestbooks, chatboxes, forums as a whole. things like discord sort of invalidate this by being irc-like in nature but having features from forums like threads and literal forum channels. however, they also have way too many fucking features regardless in an aim to make more money, so it kind of makes it misery to use anyway?
i sometimes think about going back to irc, but it's a ghost town no matter where you go, and most are linked to a discord channel anyway.
tl;dr: i want things to not suck and not be insanely monitized all the time. i'm waiting for revolt/stoat to add screensharing, then polyphony to exist for chatting with friends, and hoping for forums to come back for larger communities.
thank you for reading all this nonsense!
if you didn't, that's okay too, i understand.
