In the midst of all these confused pundits scrambling to understand *why* Trump has committed such a catastrophic unforced error, and why he has done it in such a bewilderingly incompetent (even for him) way, I feel like there is a real Occam's Razor answer here that I have not yet heard considered: he simply doesn't understand what the word "deficit" refers to in the financial jargon term "trade deficit", and everyone around him is literally too scared to explain it
