If we actually want to have productive debate in a society where enormous propagandistic noise machines are constantly misinforming people, we need to find a way to have discussions where "respect for a person" does not necessarily equate to "respect for their views". A lot of people having public debates are simply wrong. Many people participating in good faith have been lied to and successfully propagandized. Public intellectuals need to stop seeking common ground between the truth and a lie.
