I used to say I was a “virtue ethicist” but for various reasons I have had to re-evaluate that label. but neither consequentialism or deontology is a satisfying description either. Let me explore through the lens of the trolly problem: a wildly simplified view of it is that a consequentialist would say “pull the lever” because the outcome matters, a deontologist would say “don’t” because there’s a rule that you shouldn’t take actions to hurt people.
