I remember when we were both struggling grad students, barely making enough money to be able to afford rent, being on the phone with her talking about what we would do with our lives, her telling me, "I just want to do something meaningful." She has worked, relentlessly, since her childhood, first to make it to the academic achievement that would lift her to the unimaginable place of being at a university and then to help others access these opportunities.

And for this, every single day we're afraid. Afraid because of her name underneath labels and categories and grants that speak to diversity and opportunity? How twisted and horrific is this. I cannot express the rage I feel about the people who would persecute my wife for daring to teach their children. You do not know how many other people's children we've listened to, affirmed, tried to protect. And for this, we're both the enemy I suppose. Queer people who dare to want better.
