A thing I've been getting curious about lately. What do we think about the pressure, or expectation, to CONFORM in technical communities?

Maybe sit with it for a second before you answer. Because my read on this is that it's actually more complex than we think. A lot of technical communities and areas tout their innovation constantly but if you look at their social patterns? Seem pretty closed to new ideas to me.

For human beings, different domains regularly have different amounts of expectation that you'll conform, and nuance to what degree you're expected to demonstrate that conformity. This isn't necessarily a bad thing (many established and community-cherished traditions are like this). But it does create different innovation patterns.
