A thing about scientific software since it came up today is that if you are outside of typical institutional structures it becomes a barren wasteland where you're entirely uncertain how to get tools if you can't build your own.

And to be fair, some people build their own and this is very cool. But many people especially social scientists already do such laborious experiments, it is incredibly hard to do that kind of thing with your kind of time
