According to the community site of my alma mater, I am an "ex-scientist" or maybe an "ex-researcher".

(Well, in German "ehem. Wissenschaftler/in")

How exactly does one stop being a scientist or researcher? I hope they don't mean one stops being that if one does not work for a university any more.
