PSA: I disabled autocorrect on my phone* a month ago because it started hallucinating ever more bonkers “corrections” that took forever to undo. That includes weird capitalisations, whole clause restructuring, marking correctly spelled words as wrong and offering a typo as correction and many more papercuts.

For the first two weeks, I had to rejigger my finger memory to account for the things it fixed for me (usually three letter words like thr->the or fir->for). I haven’t thought about since.

I still have to make corrections, and I can’t tell if it is less than before, but at least they are less cognitive overhead because they are simple mechanical mistypes rather than semantic changes, so I feel better off.

Even if typing in a hurry might take a bit longer because the autocorrect got close enough to what had to go out most of the time and I’m a stickler for not making errors, the error case was just too catastrophic/hillarious.
