Cisgender 101!

This one has been going around for a long time from what I understand, but it's still super relevant. 😁

What is a "cisgender" person?

A cisgender person is someone who believes their gender identity matches the one they were assigned at birth. They were born like this and did not choose it!

Although you may not realise it, cisgender people are all around us! It is often very hard to tell if someone is cisgender at ﬁrst glance. Many cisgender people invest much time and energy to ensure they "pass" or appear as their assigned gender.

Some scientists believe that cisgenderism is a result of a fault in the brain of cisgender people, which prevents them from identifying as anything other than the gender they were assigned at birth.

No one is sure what causes cisgenderism: genetics, hormones, or reinforcement of gender stereotypes as a child, but there is no known cure.

Cisgender people often suffer from "body dysmorphia" – a feeling of distress or extreme dislike for their bodies, and they often take medicine or undergo surgery so that their bodies more closely match their gender identities.

Did you know...? Cisgender people aren't always straight – many cisgender people identify as gay, lesbian, or even bisexual!

If You Know a Cisgender Person

Cisgender people can often be upset if you get their pronouns wrong. If you aren't sure, remember its ok to ask!

Don't refer to them as "A cisgender", "A cis", or even as "cis scum". The correct term is a "cisgender person" or even just "person"!

Don't ask them about their genitals or if
they've had surgery. While some cisgender people are happy to talk about their bodies, most will consider it rude.

It's not a phase. Although it may be hard for you to understand, most cisgender people do not grow out of being cis.

Be patient and accept that they did not
choose to be cis.

Try to be supportive. Coming out as cis can be hard, and can force people to look at themselves in a different light.

Keep an open mind! Although the news
media often tries to reinforce certain
stereotypes, cisgender people come in all shapes and sizes.

Did you know…? Some cisgender people refer to non-cis people as "trans". Although it is sometimes used in anger, "trans" is not an insult, and is used to differentiate cisgender and normal people.

Remember, many cis people do live happy, productive lives!
