@lcamtuflcamtuf and said matrix multiplications led to matrix inversion, which is at the heart of PageRank (yes, it's been a while).

Fun thing, Alta Vista knew about the math, but they tried and failed to build an exact inverse, whereas Google built it approximately and iteratively.
