I don't know if this is down to the editing or directing, but the tone and themes and even narrative leap and flail intensely from scene to scene. Any one of them could have been fine, but the whole dynamic gets thrown out and replaced every 2 minutes.

And there's nothing star trek about it. Zero of the qualities you associate with star trek were on display.

Actually, thinking about it some more, the existence of the POV character is a huge part of the problem, with this show and with new trek generally. There's not supposed to BE a main character. It undermines the whole philosophy of start trek. It's supposed to be the optimistic socialist utopian future. The ensemble story telling is a load bearing part of that. It's about them, we, us. Making it about one person works strongly against that
