Aou are right. It is not obvious and not documented. Sane showed it with numerous other examples at @css__cafeCSS Café
Most of these examples were rather breathtaking. But not really explained, I am afraid.

I am looking into it myself and haven't got a clue, yet 😞
Somehow it seems "position-try-fallbacks" changes.
