I'm old enough remember the 1996 election in Australia and the sense that we'd taken a direction toward a less generous, inclusive country. Neither 2007 nor 2022 felt like repudiation of that path.
Somehow last night did. The LNP in the dying days of the campaign brought out the old racist cards they've played to great effect so many times.
It fell flat, and the even further right parties who looked likely to gain significant support saw that ebb away.
Australia did well yesterday.
