AppleはiPhone用にiOS、iPad用にiPadOS、Mac用にmacOSなど、プラットフォームごとにOSをリリースしています。OSの名前にはバージョン名、あるいはコードネームがつけられていましたが、2025年6月9日に開催される開発者向け年次会議「WWDC25」で発表されるとみられる次期OSからはバージョン番号ではなく、リリース年の次の年が表記されると報じられています。
