50〜60代は、設定済みパソコンしか使わない層とOSを自分でインストールできる層に分かれる。DOSや8ビット機、PC-9801を経験した世代は深く理解する傾向があり、かつてはパーティションやデュアルブートを自力で行っていた。現在は手間やコストで既製品を選び、必要に応じクリーンインストールで不要アプリ除去やプライバシー対策を行う人もいる。最新OS導入に不安があり、手順を確認したいという声がある。
