Humpback Whale
This was a large Humpback Whale that would weigh more than 30 metric tonnes, yet it had the power to breach several times. Breaching is where a whale propels its body out of the water then crashes loudly back down. Breaching is done by males, females and young Humpbacks, though it isn't especially common to see it. It has several functions, but mainly communicates to other whales to display fitness. And you need to be fit to launch such a huge body into the air. This one looks like it is doing the butterfly stroke as the long pectoral fins are nearly symmetrical, but this was a back flip as you can see the throat ridges on the top. The scientific name Megaptera means massive wings (ie fins) and in Humpbacks these are really long, about 5m. This was photographed at Gorda Banks off the southern tip of Mexico's Baja peninsula
