💡 One Small Module, One Big Lesson in Open Source Inclusion 🤝🌍
A seemingly minor Drupal module with fewer than 200 installs has sparked a major conversation about mentorship and barriers in the contribution process. In a heartfelt LinkedIn post, Kevin Reynen from the University of Denver shared how he used his status to unblock a willing contributor, Mustafa Akbay, M., who had hit a wall trying to maintain the Edit UUID module.
Mustafa was denied maintainer access due to not having the required “opt into security coverage” status—an often opaque and tough hurdle for new contributors. Kevin stepped in, took over the project, and handed the reins to Mustafa, enabling meaningful contribution where bureaucracy had stalled it.
Their story highlights a broader issue: many useful, abandoned modules are stuck in limbo, and new contributors are discouraged by rigid gatekeeping. The solution? More seasoned developers using their clout to lift up fresh voices and foster a truly inclusive community.
✨ As Kevin puts it, “Open source is about more than code. It’s about people who lift each other up.”
