Yes, it is also my recollection I was one of the original adopters of "fediverse" as federated + universe (as in the federated universe, as used in the all-inclusive greeting "good morning Fediverse" before we coined !TZAG) .
What I don't understand, Evan, is why you want to redefine it,? It seems to me the word "universe" is by definition both ultimately diverse and absolutely inclusive.
