Today's nerdsnipe: Could you transmit messages using a laser from Mexico to Canada, by bouncing off of mirrors on mountains along the way?

I did the math. The answer is yes, it's totally doable and even something amateurs could afford to build... in a vacuum. In air, not even a lonely photon would survive. Exponential decay due to air absorption is a bitch... ^^;;
