For small buffers approaching the CRC size, and/or where some bits are unused, a CRC can overlap all possible values and be used for correction. I recall seeing some code like that in an AES audio part of a broadcast compressed-media-over-coax-whose-protocol-I-can't-quite-recall codebase. Not ethernet, but unidirectional and noisy (old 75 Ohm cables running through the whole buildings).
