What is the Philosophical background?

Rooted in Kant’s philosophy: humans must never be treated solely as means to an end, but always as ends in themselves.
It is also a reaction to the Nazi dictatorship: after WWII, the framers of the Basic Law wanted to ensure that no ideology or state power could again strip people of their dignity, as had happened under the Third Reich.

It sets a binding moral and legal foundation: the state exists for the person, not the other way around.
