As someone who is ESL I donโ€™t understand why people think โ€œLLMs as a communication toolโ€ is a good thing or a decent way of overcoming language barriers

Communicating cross language barriers and understanding different levels of linguistic knowledge is a skill. Replacing that with a tool that strips your uniqueness out and always pretends to understand defeats the point!

LLMs arenโ€™t both denying non-native speakers the ability to learn in low-stakes environments, but also they make you absolutely unserious when you post.

Yeah languages suck to learn, but introducing a statistically likely output in as a middleman is actually worse than suffering an occasional misunderstanding from which you learn how to use a language more effectively.
