This is the longest-standing Firefox bug that I hit regularly: when an update is pending it just breaks in some completely unpredictable way. Something about discovering a pending update breaks something unpredictable, right down in the guts of the browser. I've been using Nightly for fifteen years and these days I hit it about three times a month.
